Wendy + Mike engagement

Wendy and Mike are active outdoors and had requested a location along Buffalo Bayou that they run and bike along. Naturally I was more than happy to accommodate their request. They were such troopers that we trekked the entire loop from Sabine Street to Studemont as I suggested trying to capture some on the new pedestrian bridges that had just opened. As you can see they were easy to work with and I look forward to capturing their wedding in October.

Elena’s family session in the park

I first met Elena when I was teaching a workshop on toy camera photography. She also loves photography, so i was very pleased she asked me to take her families portraits. Her mother was also visiting from Moscow so it was a good time to get her whole family together. We chose Herman Park because we wanted a mix of pretty spring colors and a wild, overgrown winter palette.

EWI at the Houston Zoo

While we do not share every event that we photograph we do like to highlight many of those that might be of interest to our viewers. I have been the only male member of a woman’s organization for 11 years this May, eight of which have been as an executive member of the Houston Chapter of Executive Women International.

This March we were hosted by one of our member firms the Houston Zoo for a fantastic evening at the new African Forest exhibit. As a special treat, one of the newest members of the zoo was on display and had just been born 6 days prior to our visit. In fact the day we visited they had just named the baby giraffe, Asali, which is Swahili for honey. Some of our members also got to feed the adult giraffes and check out the chimpanzees, rhinos and more. If you have not checked out this addition to the zoo it is entirely worth the trip. Enjoy!

Center for Houston’s Future luncheon

We were on hand to cover the Center for Houston’s Future’s annual luncheon at the Hyatt Regency Houston. We have covered a few events for them over the past year or so, but this one was a little bit more grand. The CHF works sort of as a think tank to try and project what the city could be like in the not so distant future. They help companies and individuals come up with ideas to try and vault our city to the top in many aspects like quality of life and education.  This year had many interesting speakers and guests. I was actually quite surprised to see former first lady, Barbara Bush, in attendance as well as one of George Foreman’s daughters singing the national anthem (she seemed to get it right as well as stay in key). In any case, if these guys have anything to do with it, we have a bright future indeed.

Jessica + Brian wedding HOLGA

Jess first contacted me with this email:

“I WOULD LOVE A HOLGA WEDDING!

Hello there!

My name is Jess and my fiancé and I are getting married on March 5, 2011 in my parent’s backyard… I am a bit of a photographer myself, only mostly as a hobby, and I love my dear little Holga which is how I found you!

Thanks for your time – I look forward to hearing from you!

Jess”

So of course, loving my trusty Holga as much as I do, I immediately contacted her to set up a consultation, and the rest is history!

For those of you who do not know, a Holga is a inexpensive “toy” camera that takes medium format film. It has a plastic body, a plastic lens and makes really crazy “bad”photos. Sometimes it leaks light, double exposes photos, distorts images and it can be selectively blurry, but in an inconsistent way. I LOVE it! I first started shooting with one about 10 years ago. In any case, I developed the black and white film myself in the darkroom and got it all scanned in for Jess and Brian.

I hope you all enjoy looking at the crazy Holga photos as much as I did. I think they really convey the overall feeling of their wedding day in a beautiful way.

Enjoy!

Jessica + Brian wedding

Jessica and Brian’s wedding was really unique and I really feel honored they chose us to capture it. They are both music lovers and very creative so they had a whole sort of vintage theme going with all of these fabulous records for decoration. I feel like we really shot two weddings on this one because I also shot a lot of images on my Holga for them as Jess is a fan of photography and loves toy camera photography.  This first blog post is all of the lovely digital images that we shot  for them and I will do a separate blog post next week of all of the Holga photos I shot on film. So fun!

Houston Center for Photography 2011 Print Auction

Last week Houston Center for Photography held their annual print auction and Laura was on hand to photograph some of the festivities. She also had a print in the auction, which was pretty exciting! This year was HCP’s 30th year serving the Houston photography community and the auction was a great success. Not only did they sell out for the first time ever, they also had record sales! Print sales alone were over $107,000 this year and the auction raised over 60% more than last year (which was also a huge success).

Thanks to Bevin Bering-Dubrowski, the auction committee and all of the staff and volunteers at HCP for making it what it is today!

Oh and by the way, Laura’s print went over by $100 of the asking price:)Sweet!
