Keeping up with the Joneses – Susie with Susie’s Cakes

This is part of our ongoing blog segment we are doing at D. Jones Photography.  David and I hand pick some of our favorite vendors, meet them at their workplace or favorite space and ask them some questions about the industry and life in Houston. It’s our way of giving back to the industry and also letting our readers meet some awesome vendors whom they may not have heard of before, or who work behind the scenes. To view additional vendor interviews follow this link to Keeping up with the Joneses.

Continuing with our Industry Monday interviews we present to you Susie Edwards with Susie’s Cakes and Confections. To view some of the events that we have enjoyed her cakes at view this link.

How did you get into the wedding/event business?

I was inspired by my mother and grandmother in Argentina as a young girl. I have always been interested in baking and cooking. Much later I broadened my interest and took baking and design courses.

What inspires you?

The things that really get my attention these days are the new and exciting looks and new materials for decorating. It gives me a lot more inspiration for the many designs and decorations that new brides bring into my shop.

What wedding trends do you see coming to the Houston market?

As mentioned before the newer, more modern designs made with fondant are exciting. However, when we do some of the traditional cakes it can be very satisfying for us to please the client.

How do you think Houston is different than other markets around

the country?

Houston is a young city with exciting young brides who are professional and generally well educated.

Best thing about having a wedding in Houston?

There are so many exciting venues for a reception here in Houston. A bride has excellent choices for a reception site and many wonderful vendors to choose from for everything.

How many hours do you put into an average wedding?

I don’t consider any wedding average but a minimum of time for even the smallest wedding can take many hours of design, preparation, baking, decorating, set-up and delivery.

Describe your dream wedding.

I consider every wedding the dream wedding of the bride, not mine. So, we do our best to make her dream come true.
